Ten Frame Printables

Blank ten frames for counters, double ten frames for numbers to 20, ten frame cards with matching number cards, and worksheets for counting and making ten. All free to print, and the blank frames can be coloured online too.

How to use these pages

A ten frame is a 5 × 2 box of squares. Counters go in the top row first, left to right, then the bottom row, so children can see at a glance how many there are and how many more make ten. Seven is “five and two more”, and “three less than ten”.

Use the blank frames with counters, buttons or small toys, or colour the squares online. The cards are for matching, ordering and quick-look games, and the worksheets practise counting and making ten, with answers on page 2.

Frequently asked questions

Why fill the top row first?

Filling the top row first, left to right, means five always looks the same: a full top row. Children quickly learn to see 5, then 5 and 2 more, without counting one by one.

What is a double ten frame?

Two ten frames together, for numbers up to 20. The top frame fills first, so 14 looks like a full ten and 4 more, which is the start of place value.

What age are ten frames for?

Ten frames suit children from about 3 to 7, from first counting in preschool to adding within 20.

Is there a PDF to print?

Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
