How to use these pages
Number lines show numbers as distances: each jump to the right is one more (or one step more), and each jump to the left is one less. Children use them to count on, count back, add, subtract and, later, to place negative numbers, fractions and decimals.
Most pages print several identical lines to cut into strips for the desk or a maths book. The fraction lines line up halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths and tenths, so equivalent fractions sit one above the other. The worksheet has missing numbers to fill in, with the answer key on page 2.
Frequently asked questions
How do you use a number line to add?
Put a finger on the first number and make jumps to the right, one for each number you are adding. 6 + 3: start at 6, jump three times, land on 9. To subtract, jump to the left.
Which number line should I print first?
Start with 0–10, then 0–20. When children can count in tens, the 0–100 by tens line helps them jump in tens and then ones.
Why do number lines have arrows?
The arrows show that the numbers carry on forever in both directions, even though the printed line has to stop.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
