Up nextNumber Line −20 to 20 →Three number lines from −10 to 10, with zero in the middle. Numbers below zero sit on the left, so −7 is smaller than −2. Children use them for temperatures (“it was 3 degrees and fell by 5”), for ordering negative numbers and for adding and subtracting across zero.

Number line activities
- Count on: start at a number and make jumps to the right. Count back: jump to the left.
- Ask “which number is halfway between?” for two numbers on the −10 to 10 line.
- Draw the jumps as little arcs above the line so the working shows.
- Pick two numbers on the line and count the jumps between them: that is the difference.
More to print: the other number lines, ten frames for counting to 20, and the hundreds chart.
