Handwriting Paper

Free printable lined handwriting paper with a dashed middle line, in 24, 18, 12 and 9 mm line heights, with or without a picture box, portrait or landscape. All 10 worksheets are free to print or download as print-ready PDFs (US Letter and A4).

How to use these pages

Each sheet has rows of three lines: a solid top line, a dashed middle line that shows how tall small letters like a, c and o should be, and a darker baseline to sit the letters on, with space underneath for tails on g, j, p, q and y. The size is the distance from the top line to the baseline.

Pick the size by age and by how big the child writes: 24 mm for preschool, 18 mm for kindergarten and Year 1, 12 mm for second and third grade and for cursive, 9 mm for older children. The picture-box sheets are good for journals and stories: draw first, then write. For letters to trace, see the tracing worksheets and cursive worksheets.

Frequently asked questions

What size handwriting paper should I use?

Use the size that matches how big your child writes now: most preschoolers need 24 mm lines, kindergarten and Year 1 children 18 mm, and second graders 12 mm. Move down a size when letters fit comfortably.

Will the lines print at the right size?

Yes, as long as you print the PDF at 100% (actual size), not "fit to page". The sizes are measured on the Letter PDF; the A4 PDF is about 3% smaller.

Is there a PDF to print?

Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
