How to use these pages
Start with the cursive alphabet chart to see every letter at once, then practise one letter a day. Each letter page shows the capital and small letter drawn large with numbered arrows, two rows to trace from green start dots, a joined word, a row to copy and a row to write alone. The capital and small letter charts show every stroke with arrows.
Once the letters are familiar, the joins practice sheets work through the joins one kind at a time: short letters, tall letters, round letters, top joins after o, b, v and w, and letters with tails, then topic words such as colors, animals and the days of the week. Sentence sheets are the last step.
The letters are drawn in Playwrite US Trad, a free, open-licensed font by TypeTogether in the traditional looped style taught in many US schools. Joins come from the font itself, so every word is joined the way the letters are designed to connect. Schools teach slightly different shapes, so check your own school’s handwriting scheme if a letter looks different.
Frequently asked questions
What age is cursive for?
Many children start cursive in second or third grade, around ages 7 to 9, once their print letters are steady. Older children and adults use the same sheets to learn or tidy up their cursive.
Which cursive letters should I teach first?
Small letters before capitals, and letters that share a starting stroke together: c, a, d, g, o and q all start like c; i, t, u and w start with a swing up from the baseline; l, b, h and k are tall loops.
Do the cursive sheets show stroke order?
Yes. Every letter has a green 1 where the pencil starts, arrows that show which way to go and numbers for the strokes that follow, like the dot on i or the cross on t.
