24 matching cards on 2 sheets: 12 winter pictures, each on two cards, with its name underneath (snowflake, mitten, hat, snowman, penguin, sled, ice skate, polar bear, scarf, hot chocolate, igloo, boots). Colour them, cut along the dashed lines and play pairs. Made for snow days, rainy days and the winter holidays; play with all 12 pairs, or start with fewer for younger players.

How to make and play

  1. Print both sheets at 100% on card stock (or glue them onto thin card).
  2. Colour the pictures. Matching cards coloured the same make the game easier for little ones.
  3. Cut along the dashed lines: 24 cards, 12 on each of the 2 sheets.
  4. Shuffle and lay them face down in rows. Take turns turning over two cards; keep a pair and go again, or turn them back.
  5. When every pair is found, the player with the most pairs wins.

What it practises

Remembering where things are (visual memory), taking turns, matching pictures and, with the names under each picture, matching words. Counting pairs at the end adds a little maths: who has more, and how many more?

The pictures in this set: Snowflake, Mitten, Hat, Snowman, Penguin, Sled, Ice skate, Polar bear, Scarf, Hot chocolate, Igloo, Boots. For more games for a group, see the picture bingo sets and the I spy sheets.

Questions about memory games

How do you play the memory game?

Shuffle the cards and lay them face down in rows. On your turn, turn over any two cards. If they match, keep them and have another turn. If not, turn them face down again and the next player goes. When all the cards are gone, the player with the most pairs wins.

Do I need to print the cards twice?

No. Every picture is printed twice in the PDF, so one print gives you the whole game: 24 cards (12 pairs) on two sheets, or 12 big cards (6 pairs) for the preschool set.

How can I make it easier or harder?

For toddlers, start with 4 to 6 pairs face up and match them, then play face down. For older children, use all 12 pairs, mix two sets together, or play matching the word side only.
