About Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night, also called Guy Fawkes Night, is on 5 November in the UK and in New Zealand, where it is a smaller event. It remembers the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, and today most people mark it by going to an organised fireworks display. Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night) is on 5 November every year. In 2026 that is a Thursday, so many public displays are held on the weekend before or after.

Is Guy Fawkes celebrated in New Zealand?

Yes, on a smaller scale than in the UK. Fireworks go on sale for a few days before 5 November, and many towns hold a public display instead.
