How We Make Our Printables
Every colouring page, worksheet and puzzle on Colouring Nest is drawn by code we wrote for this site, checked by automated tests, and published as a free PDF for US Letter and A4. This page explains how, so you know what you are printing.
Original art from our own drawing engine
- Mandalas, geometric patterns and stained glass are drawn from geometric rules (symmetry, rings and tiles), in easy, medium and hard levels.
- Names, letters and words in bubble letters are built from an open-licensed rounded typeface, turned into outlines you can colour.
- Colour-by-number pictures are hand-made pixel art, each with a coloured answer key.
- Mazes, word searches, sudoku and nonograms come from puzzle generators written for this site (the algorithms we learned from are credited in our third-party notices), and they come with answer keys.
- Handwriting and tracing sheets follow the letter formation taught in schools, including New Zealand and Australian print styles.
We never copy artwork from other sites and never use licensed characters or brands. Because the pages are drawn by code, many of them are variations on a design: easy, medium and hard versions, or the same template in three sizes.
How we check pages
- Before a release, automated checks run over every built page: titles and descriptions must be unique, every internal link and download must resolve, each colouring page must link both a US Letter and an A4 PDF, and a sample of PDFs is opened to check the paper size.
- New kinds of artwork are rendered and looked at before they go live; cluttered or ugly art doesn’t ship.
- A sample of page types is tested in a phone-sized and a desktop browser for layout, tap-to-colour and accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA checks).
Facts and data we use
- Name pages use the most popular first names from public birth-registration data (for example the US Social Security Administration, the UK Office for National Statistics and New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs). We don’t publish name meanings or origins unless a reliable source gives them.
- Guides for parents, teachers and carers in Learn link every claim to the source it comes from, such as national curriculum documents and health organisations. We use AI writing and coding tools to help build the site and draft guides, and a guide is only published when each claim has its source linked.
- Dates such as festival days are taken from published calendars, and a page’s “Updated” date is shown only when its content really changed.
