How to use these pages

A picture scavenger hunt is a checklist of things to find. Children look for each picture, tick its box when they spot it and colour it in afterwards. Because every item has a picture as well as its name, children who can’t read yet can play on their own, and early readers get to match the word to the picture.

Each hunt is one sheet, with a second page that lists the same things as words, with tick boxes and a big box to draw the best find. Use the word list for older children, for a second round, or to keep score in teams. The Christmas lights hunt has a “How many?” box instead of a tick, so children can count every lit-up reindeer and snowman on the drive. The classroom hunt adds a sheet of picture cards to cut out and hide around the room.

Hunts work best with a clipboard (or a book to lean on) and a pencil, and with a time limit for a group: ten minutes for little ones, twenty for older children. Agree on an area first, such as the living room, the backyard or one street, and decide whether everyone hunts alone or in pairs.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do a scavenger hunt with little kids?

Give each child the picture sheet and a pencil, agree on the area (one room, the garden, one street) and let them tick each picture when they find it. For toddlers, use the 9-picture preschool hunts and walk around with them, pointing and naming things as you go.

What is on a Christmas scavenger hunt list?

Our indoor Christmas hunt has 15 things to find around a decorated house: a Christmas tree, star, present, stocking, candy cane, bell, wreath, ornament, gingerbread man, candle, angel, lights, snow globe, Santa hat and a Christmas card. The preschool hunt has 9 of them as big pictures.

How does the Christmas lights hunt work?

Take one sheet and a pencil per child on a Christmas lights drive or evening walk. Each time they spot a lit-up tree, star, reindeer, snowman or another picture on the sheet, they add a tally mark or a number in its box. At the end, see which one you saw the most.

What paper size is the PDF?

Every hunt has a US Letter PDF and an A4 PDF with the same pages. Print at 100% (actual size); the pictures are outlines, so they can be coloured in.
