12 pictures to look for on a Christmas lights walk or drive: lit-up tree, star, reindeer, snowman, candy cane, present, wreath, angel, bell, sleigh, Santa hat, snowflake lights. Count each one you spot and write how many in its box. Every picture has its name underneath, so children who can’t read yet can play too, and they can colour the pictures in afterwards. Made for a Christmas lights drive or an evening walk around the neighbourhood, one sheet and a pencil per child. The PDF has 2 pages: the picture hunt and a word list with a box to draw the best find.

How to play

  1. Print one sheet per child at 100% and bring pencils and a clipboard (or a book to lean on).
  2. On the drive or walk, each time someone spots something on the sheet, they add a tally mark or a number in its box.
  3. Older children can keep score on the word list (page 2), which has a line for each one.
  4. At home, colour the pictures and fill in which one you saw the most.

What it practises

Looking closely and noticing details, matching pictures (and words) to real things, and counting with tally marks. It’s also a good way to get everyone up and moving.

The PDF has 2 pages. For more games for a group, see the picture bingo sets, the I spy sheets and the memory games.

Questions about scavenger hunts

How does the Christmas lights hunt work?

Take one sheet and a pencil per child on a Christmas lights drive or evening walk. Each time they spot a lit-up tree, star, reindeer, snowman or another picture on the sheet, they add a tally mark or a number in its box. At the end, see which one you saw the most.

How do you do a scavenger hunt with little kids?

Give each child the picture sheet and a pencil, agree on the area (one room, the garden, one street) and let them tick each picture when they find it. For toddlers, use the 9-picture preschool hunts and walk around with them, pointing and naming things as you go.

What paper size is the PDF?

Every hunt has a US Letter PDF and an A4 PDF with the same pages. Print at 100% (actual size); the pictures are outlines, so they can be coloured in.

Use on your class or library site
