12 pictures to look for hidden around the classroom: Christmas tree, star, present, stocking, candy cane, bell, reindeer, gingerbread man, snowman, Santa hat, snowflake, holly. Tick each box when you find it. Every picture has its name underneath, so children who can’t read yet can play too, and they can colour the pictures in afterwards. Made for the last week of term: hide the matching pictures from the PDF around the room and let the class find them. The PDF has 3 pages: the picture hunt, a word list with a box to draw the best find, and picture cards to cut out and hide.

How to play

  1. Print the PDF at 100%: one picture sheet per child, and the cards page once.
  2. Cut out the 12 picture cards along the dashed lines and hide them around the room before the class comes in: on shelves, under chairs, taped to the door.
  3. Hand out the sheets. Children tick each picture when they find its card (leave the cards where they are, so everyone can find them).
  4. When everyone has finished, colour the pictures, or play again with the word list on page 2.

What it practises

Looking closely and noticing details, matching pictures (and words) to real things, and counting ticks. It’s also a good way to get everyone up and moving.

The PDF has 3 pages. For more games for a group, see the picture bingo sets, the I spy sheets and the memory games.

Questions about scavenger hunts

What is on a Christmas scavenger hunt list?

Our indoor Christmas hunt has 15 things to find around a decorated house: a Christmas tree, star, present, stocking, candy cane, bell, wreath, ornament, gingerbread man, candle, angel, lights, snow globe, Santa hat and a Christmas card. The preschool hunt has 9 of them as big pictures.

How do you do a scavenger hunt with little kids?

Give each child the picture sheet and a pencil, agree on the area (one room, the garden, one street) and let them tick each picture when they find it. For toddlers, use the 9-picture preschool hunts and walk around with them, pointing and naming things as you go.

What paper size is the PDF?

Every hunt has a US Letter PDF and an A4 PDF with the same pages. Print at 100% (actual size); the pictures are outlines, so they can be coloured in.

Use on your class or library site

Paste this into your school, class or library web page. It shows the picture and a link back here, so families can print it themselves. You can change the wording.
