A star crown to colour and wear: five spires with a star on each, for a star pupil or a nativity play. Page 1 is the crown front; page 2 has two bands, one with five numbered slits and one with a tab, so the crown fits heads from about 45 to 53 cm when printed on A4 (18¼ to 21½ in on US Letter). Print the PDF landscape at 100%, on card if you have it.

Crown sizes

Measure round the head just above the ears, then use the slit that matches. Sizes are for the PDF printed at 100% (actual size).

153 cm21½ in (55 cm)
251 cm20¾ in (53 cm)
349 cm20 in (51 cm)
447 cm19¼ in (49 cm)
545 cm18¼ in (47 cm)

For a bigger head, glue a strip of paper between band 2 and the crown front: every 1 cm of strip adds 1 cm.

How to make the crown

  1. Print both pages landscape at 100% (actual size), on card if you have it.
  2. Colour the crown front and the two bands.
  3. Cut out the crown and both bands, and cut the five slits on band 1 with the tip of the scissors (an adult job for small children).
  4. Glue or tape the grey “glue” end of band 1 behind the left end of the crown, and band 2 behind the right end.
  5. Try it on: push the tab on band 2 through the slit that fits, then fold the tab’s corners open so it holds.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% (actual size) so the shapes match the sizes listed.
  • Thin card (160–200 gsm) makes sturdy stencils and decorations.
  • Fold the paper and cut two layers at once for matching pairs.
  • Paper snowflakes are the exception: use thin printer or origami paper, because every cut goes through 12 layers.
