Learning number names
Number names are the numbers written in words. Most children learn them in the first two years of school, after they can read and write the digits. Some ways to practise:
- Learn one to twenty first: eleven, twelve and the teens are the irregular ones.
- Learn the tens next: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety. Watch the spelling of forty (no u).
- Then build every other name from a tens word and a ones word, joined with a hyphen: forty-seven.
Keep the number names 1 to 100 chart beside the worksheets for checking, and see the hundreds chart for counting in digits.
