How to use these pages
Pixel art on paper: every square is one pixel. Start with a 16×16 grid and a simple shape such as a heart or a piece of fruit, colour the outline first, then fill the inside. The darker lines every 4 or 8 squares help you count when copying a design from a screen.
Colour by number: the pixel art pictures below have a number in every square and a colour key underneath. They are a calm way in for children and a good warm-up before designing your own. Page 2 of each PDF is the finished picture.
Crafts and games: the grids double as charts for cross-stitch, perler or fuse beads, knitting colourwork and block-by-block game builds. Use the 48×48 or 64×64 grid for larger designs.
Frequently asked questions
What size pixel art grid should I start with?
16×16. It holds a recognisable picture with only a few dozen coloured squares, and the squares are large enough for felt tips. Move to 24×24 or 32×32 for faces and shading.
How big are the squares?
Each grid fills the page, so the squares get smaller as the grid gets bigger: about 12 mm for 16×16, 6 mm for 32×32 and 3 mm for 64×64 on US Letter. Each page lists the exact size for Letter and A4.
What should I colour pixel art with?
Felt-tip pens or markers give flat, even squares like real pixels. Coloured pencils work well on the smaller 48×48 and 64×64 grids. A ruler helps keep the edges crisp.
Are the pixel art pictures original?
Yes. Every picture is our own design, drawn square by square, with no characters from games or films.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes, free vector PDFs for US Letter and A4 on every page; the colour by number PDFs have the finished picture on page 2.
