How to use a after-school routine
Plan routines for the busy times of the family day, such as before and after school, and let children take on parts of the routine themselves (Raising Children Network). After school, a snack and some play often come before homework; choose the order that works for your child and keep it the same each day.
When your child follows the chart without being reminded, praise the exact thing they did. The Raising Children Network’s own example fits this chart: “Thanks for getting your lunch box out of your bag. Good remembering!”
Regular times for homework, play and meals also help children learn to organise themselves and take responsibility, according to HealthyChildren.org.

Questions about this page
Should homework come before or after play?
There is no single right answer. Many children manage homework better after a snack and a short break. Try one order for a couple of weeks, then adjust it together.
Can I change the tasks?
Yes. In the maker you can remove, reorder or add tasks, such as music practice or reading time, and choose which days to show.
Can I put my child’s name on the chart?
Yes. Open the routine chart maker, type the name and it is drawn in big bubble letters at the top. You can change the pictures and tasks too, then print or save a PDF. The name stays in your browser: it isn’t sent to us, saved, or added to the page address.

Printing tips
- Print at 100% (actual size) on Letter or A4 paper; thicker paper or card lasts longer on a fridge.
- Slip the chart into a plastic sleeve or laminate it, and tick with a dry-erase marker so you can wipe it clean each week.
- Stickers stay on better than ink on a laminated chart. Star stickers suit younger children.
