How to use these pages
Free printable word scrambles for kids and families: the letters of each word are mixed up, and you put them back in the right order. There are easy scrambles with a word bank, picture scrambles for preschool and kindergarten that give the first letter, and a hard Christmas scramble for teens and adults with long words, two-word answers and no word bank.
Every word was mixed up by a program from a fixed starting point and then checked: each scramble uses exactly the letters of its answer, never spells the answer or another word on the sheet, keeps no more than a third of its letters in their places, and never spells a rude word. Two-word answers are mixed up one word at a time, so the gap is a clue.
Each PDF has two pages, the puzzle and the answer key, in US Letter and A4. You can also solve any scramble on the page: type each answer in its box and press “Check”.
Frequently asked questions
How do you solve a word scramble?
Say the mixed-up letters out loud and look for pieces of words you know, like SH, CH, ING or a double letter. Try the first letter: it is often a consonant that sounds right with the vowel next to it. Count the boxes, write the word, then cross the letters off the scramble to check you used every one.
What is the word bank for?
The word bank lists every answer in alphabetical order. Early readers find the word that uses the same letters and copy it, so the puzzle practises spelling as well as reading. Cover it with a sticky note to make the sheet harder.
What age are these word scrambles for?
The picture scrambles suit children from about four who know their letter sounds; the easy scrambles with a word bank suit about six to ten; the winter, New Year, Hanukkah and Lunar New Year scrambles suit about seven to twelve; the Christmas scramble challenge is for teens and adults.
Are the answers included?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, the “Show solution” button fills in the sheet on screen, and the solve-online list has a “Show answers” button.
