Klondike Solitaire with Large Cards

Klondike is the classic one-player card game, often just called solitaire or patience. Ours is free, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and has large, clear cards with a “Larger print” button for even bigger ones. Choose turn 1 (easier) or turn 3, undo as often as you like, and ask for a hint. Every deal here has been won by a computer, so every game can be won.

How to play klondike solitaire

  1. Build four piles, one per suit, from Ace up to King, in the top-right spaces (the foundations).
  2. In the seven columns, put a card on one that is one higher and the other colour: a red 6 on a black 7. You can move a run of cards together.
  3. Only a King (or a run starting with a King) can go in an empty column. A face-down card turns over when it is uncovered.
  4. Tap the stock (top left) to turn over 1 card, or 3 in turn 3. When it runs out, tap it again to turn the waste back over. There is no limit.
  5. Tap a card to select it, then tap where it should go. Tap the same card twice, or double-click it, to move it to the best place automatically. You can also drag cards.
  6. Keyboard: arrow keys move between piles, Enter picks up the top card (Up arrow adds more cards from the column), Enter on another pile puts it there, U undoes, Escape cancels.

    Klondike solitaire tips and strategy

    • Turn over the face-down cards first. A move that uncovers a hidden card in the columns is usually better than one that only plays from the stock.
    • Work on the columns with the most face-down cards: the right-hand columns hide the most cards (up to six), and the cards you need are often under them.
    • Don’t empty a column unless a King is ready to go in it. An empty column that only a King can fill is no use until then.
    • Don’t rush every card to the foundations. A red 4 in a column may be the only place for a black 3 you need to move. Aces and 2s are always safe to put up.
    • When a column has a choice of two 6s to take your 5, pick the one that frees a face-down card or the colour you will need next.
    • Undo is unlimited, so use it to explore: try a line of moves, and if it goes nowhere, undo back and try the other way.

    Questions

    Can every game be won?

Yes. Not every Klondike deal can be won, so we only use deals that our solver program has won: 366 for turn 1 and 366 for turn 3. If you get stuck, Undo and try another way.

What is the difference between turn 1 and turn 3?

In turn 1 you turn over one card from the stock at a time, so every card is easy to reach: it is the relaxed version. In turn 3 you turn over three and can only play the top one, which takes more planning.

Is this solitaire good for seniors?

It was made with seniors in mind: big card numbers and suits, a “Larger print” button, no time limit (the clock is only for your own record), unlimited undo, hints, a pause button and no pop-ups. Sound is off unless you turn it on.

    What is “Today’s game”?

One deal a day, the same for everyone, so you can compare with a friend. Win a game on a day in a row to keep your streak going. “New game” gives you a random deal.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?

It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.

Does it work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Tap or drag with a finger on a tablet or phone, or use a mouse. It also plays with the keyboard alone (see “How to play”). Turn a phone sideways for more room.
