Our senior-friendly games, and why each one suits

  1. Klondike solitaire

Large cards with big numbers and suits, turn 1 for a relaxed game, unlimited Undo and Hint, and every deal can be won.

  2. Mahjong solitaire

Start on the small board of 36 big picture tiles, each with its name printed on it. Hint and Shuffle are always there.

  3. Memory match

“Large and calm” style: six big cards with pictures and words, no clock on show, and a miss stays face up until the next tap.

  4. Word search online

“Large print” gives a 9 × 9 grid with big letters and words across and down only. Hint rings the first letter of a word.

  5. Jigsaw puzzles

Our bright pictures in 9 to 64 pieces; the faint picture on the board shows where each piece goes.

  6. Jigsaw puzzles for seniors

Big pieces that click into place, a faint guide picture and no time limit; start with 16 or 25 pieces.

  7. Spot the difference

“Large pictures” shows one big picture above the other with five clear changes. Wrong taps cost nothing.

  8. FreeCell

Every card is face up from the start, so it is pure, unhurried planning. Safe cards go up by themselves.

  9. Spider solitaire

One suit is the gentle way in; finished runs leave by themselves.

  10. Golf solitaire

A short game: one higher or one lower, with the cards you can play outlined.

  11. Pyramid solitaire

Pairs that add up to 13: a little mental arithmetic in every move.

  12. Nonograms

Picture logic from 5 × 5. Check outlines mistakes and Hint fixes one.

  13. Dots and boxes

The pencil-and-paper game, against a gentle computer or with a grandchild on the same tablet.

  14. Sudoku online

Easy to hard 9 × 9 with big number buttons, Notes, Check and Hint; every puzzle has one answer and needs no guessing.

  15. Daily puzzles

A word scramble, mini crossword, word search and sudoku, new every day, to play online or print.

  16. Word ladder

Change one letter at a time from the start word to the end word: a gentle word puzzle with big letters, a Hint button and a new ladder every day.

  17. Christmas mahjong solitaire

The small board of 36 big Christmas tiles (snowman, present, bell…), each with its name printed on it; a new board every day in December.

  18. Christmas trivia quiz

Four big answers to choose from, no time limit and a short fact after each question; put it on the TV and let a group call out the answers.

  19. Bingo caller

Huge, high-contrast numbers on the lounge TV, a slow auto-call or calling by hand, optional voice, and a card checker; works with our large print word bingo cards.

  20. Yukon and Scorpion solitaire

Klondike-style patience with no stock to turn and every deal winnable; Scorpion builds in suit for a puzzle. Large cards, Undo and Hint.

  21. Canfield and Forty Thieves

Two classic harder patience games for experienced players, offered only on deals our solver has won, with large cards and no time limit.

Calm choices for memory loss and dementia

For someone living with dementia, the best game is often a short, familiar one that ends in success. Try memory match in its “Large and calm” style (six big cards, each with a picture and its word), spot the difference with “Large pictures”, a jigsaw of 4 or 9 pieces with the faint picture on, or a large print word search. Sit alongside, take turns, and talk about the pictures. Stop while it is still fun. These are pastimes for enjoyment and company, not a treatment, a therapy or a memory test.

For carers and activity coordinators

Every game has a “Today’s game” that is the same for everyone that day, so a group on a big screen, or residents on their own tablets, can do the same puzzle and compare. A tablet turned sideways with “Larger print” on works well for one or two people; a television or projector suits a group, with one person tapping. Nothing needs installing and there are no accounts to manage, so it works on a shared device.

For a bingo afternoon, the free online bingo caller puts huge, high-contrast numbers on the lounge TV in “Big screen” mode, calls by hand or automatically at a slow pace, can read the calls aloud, and checks a winning card. It works with our large print word bingo cards.

Prefer paper? Our seniors and care homes page collects large print word searches, large print sudoku and bold and easy colouring pages that photocopy well for a group, with answers.

Questions

What are the best free online games for seniors?

Card games like Klondike solitaire with large cards and FreeCell, mahjong solitaire with big picture tiles, a calm memory match game, word search in large print, jigsaw puzzles and spot the difference are favourites. All of ours are free, play in a web browser without downloading anything, need no sign-up, have a “Larger print” button and no time limit.

Do I need to download anything or create an account?

No. Open the page and play on a computer, tablet or phone. There is no app, no account and no email address to give. Your scores are kept in your own browser only.

Are there pop-up ads?

No pop-ups, no videos to watch before you play, and no adverts inside or next to the game. A few ordinary adverts further down the page pay for the site.

Are the games suitable for people living with dementia?

Many carers use calm, familiar games as a shared activity: memory match in its “Large and calm” style, spot the difference with large pictures, jigsaws with few pieces and the faint picture on, and large print word search. There is no clock to beat and Hint is always there. These are pastimes for enjoyment, not a treatment or a test, and we make no medical claims.

Can a care home or day centre use them with a group?

Yes, freely. Put a game on a big screen or a tablet and play together: “Today’s game” is the same for everyone each day, so a group can all do the same puzzle. Many of the puzzles also print, with answers, from our seniors and care homes page.

How do I make the cards or letters bigger?

Press “Larger print” under any game: cards, tiles, letters and buttons get bigger, and the choice is remembered for every game. You can also zoom the page (Ctrl and + on a computer, or pinch on a tablet) and turn a tablet sideways for more room.
