About Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is on 2 February every year in the United States and Canada. The tradition says that if a groundhog comes out of its burrow and sees its shadow, it goes back underground and winter lasts six more weeks; if the day is cloudy and there is no shadow, spring comes early. It is a bit of fun rather than a real forecast.

Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, are large ground squirrels. They dig burrows and hibernate through the winter. The no shadow page and the card have the biggest shapes for young children; the burrow page shows the tunnel underground, which makes a good science talk about hibernation.
