A page for the first day of any school year in New Zealand or Australia. Children write the Year they are starting (0 or 1 for new entrants, F or P for Foundation and Prep), the date, their first name, their age and their teacher’s name, draw themselves on day one and say what they are excited to learn. At the bottom they circle a face for how they feel, or draw their own.

Ideas for the first day

  • Hand it out as a calm first activity while families say goodbye.
  • Talk about the feelings faces first: it is fine to feel nervous and excited at the same time.
  • Keep the sheets and give them back at the end of the year, next to an I have grown page.

This is the New Zealand and Australia version: it says Year, colour and favourite, and suits UK classrooms too. A US version says Grade, color and favorite.

Use on your class or library site
