A-Frame Gingerbread House Template: the easiest house to build: two triangle ends and two roof panels that are also the walls. Good for a first gingerbread house with children: only four pieces, and nothing to hold while the walls set. The front is 4.5 in wide and 5 in tall on US Letter (11.9 × 13.2 cm on A4); every piece is labelled with its size on both papers, and each sheet has a check bar so you can make sure it printed at actual size.

Sizes of each piece when the PDF is printed at 100% (actual size). Use the Letter PDF in the US and Canada and the A4 PDF in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The roof is 6 in from ridge to eave, so it overhangs the walls a little, and sticks out 0.25 in past each end. The dotted line on the roof marks where it rests on the wall tops.

How to bake and build it

  1. Print the template at 100% (Actual size) and measure the check bar for your paper. Cut the pieces out of the paper.
  2. Roll the dough about ¼ in (6 mm) thick on baking paper, lay the paper pieces on it and cut round them with a sharp knife. Cut the windows and door now, while the dough is soft.
  3. Chill the cut pieces for 10 minutes so they hold their shape, then bake. As soon as they come out, lay the paper back on and trim any spread edges straight.
  4. Let every piece cool completely (an hour, or overnight) before building.
  5. Pipe thick royal icing along the edges. Stand the front and back between the side walls on the base plan, hold for a minute, and leave the walls to set for 30 minutes before adding the roof.
  6. Add the roof panels, then the chimney, and leave it overnight before the heavy decorating.

Pieces: A ends (cut 2), B roof (cut 2). No baking? Cut the same pieces from cereal-box card and glue them with a glue gun or PVA.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% (actual size) so the shapes match the sizes listed.
  • Thin card (160–200 gsm) makes sturdy stencils and decorations.
  • Fold the paper and cut two layers at once for matching pairs.
  • Paper snowflakes are the exception: use thin printer or origami paper, because every cut goes through 12 layers.
