Guru Nanak Jayanti coloring ideas

Class idea for Gurpurab: colour the langar plate and the three teachings page, then talk about Vand Chakna, sharing with others, and plan one small way to share this week. The Happy Gurpurab card is lovely to give to a Sikh friend or neighbour.

About Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak (1469 to 1539) was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He was born at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, and spent his last years at Kartarpur, where he taught the unity of God and meditation on the divine name (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Most Sikhs celebrate his birthday, Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab (also Gurpurb or Prakash Purab), on the full moon of the month of Kartik, so the date moves each year; some calendars mark it in April (BBC Religions).

For a Gurpurab, the Guru Granth Sahib is read from beginning to end over about 48 hours, finishing on the day. Gurdwaras are decorated with flowers, flags and lights, hymns are sung, processions (nagar kirtan) are led by five Sikhs representing the Panj Piare carrying the Nishan Sahib, and free meals, langar, are served to everyone (BBC). Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, the Golden Temple, was designed by Guru Arjan and opens on all four sides as a sign that it is open to all (SGPC).

How we made these pages: like many Sikh families and gurdwaras, we never draw Guru Nanak Dev Ji or any of the Gurus, so there are no portraits or figures here. We draw the Khanda whole and upright, the Nishan Sahib, gurdwaras, the Golden Temple, lights, food and lettering, and we don't print Gurmukhi or Ik Onkar, which opens the Guru Granth Sahib, on a sheet that may be scribbled on. Guru Nanak Jayanti questions

When is Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026?

Tuesday 24 November 2026, a gazetted holiday in India. In 2027 it is on Sunday 14 November. The date follows the full moon of Kartik, so it changes every year.

Why is there no picture of Guru Nanak on these pages?

Many Sikhs consider pictures of the Gurus disrespectful, so we draw the Khanda, the Nishan Sahib, the Golden Temple, gurdwaras, langar and lights instead.

What is the Khanda?

The Khanda is the emblem of the Sikhs: a double-edged sword (the khanda) in the middle, a ring (the chakkar) around it and two curved swords (kirpans) on either side (Sikh Coalition).

What are good easy Guru Nanak Jayanti drawings for kids?

The Happy Gurpurab card, the Khanda, the Nishan Sahib and the gurdwara with diyas have big, simple shapes for young children. The Golden Temple at night and the hard diya pattern have more detail for older kids and adults.
