Which template should I use?
- First house, or baking with young children: the A-frame. Four pieces, and the roof is the walls, so nothing has to stand on its own while the icing sets.
- A classic house with a chimney: the gingerbread house template with measurements, all main pieces on one sheet.
- A centrepiece or a cardboard model: the large template, one piece per sheet.
- A class or party: the small template has a whole house on one sheet, or try the no-bake paper house.
How to bake and build a gingerbread house
- Print the template at 100% (Actual size) and measure the check bar for your paper. Cut the pieces out of the paper.
- Roll the dough about ¼ in (6 mm) thick on baking paper, lay the paper pieces on it and cut round them with a sharp knife. Cut the windows and door now, while the dough is soft.
- Chill the cut pieces for 10 minutes so they hold their shape, then bake. As soon as they come out, lay the paper back on and trim any spread edges straight.
- Let every piece cool completely (an hour, or overnight) before building.
- Pipe thick royal icing along the edges. Stand the front and back between the side walls on the base plan, hold for a minute, and leave the walls to set for 30 minutes before adding the roof.
- Add the roof panels, then the chimney, and leave it overnight before the heavy decorating.
Frequently asked questions
How do I print a gingerbread house template at the right size?
Open the PDF for your paper (US Letter or A4) and print at 100% or "Actual size", not "Fit to page". Then measure the check bar on the sheet: it should be exactly 1 inch on Letter or 2 cm on A4. Every piece is labelled with its size on both papers.
What size is the gingerbread house?
The classic house is 3.5 in wide, 4.5 in deep and 4.25 in tall to the ridge on US Letter. The large one is 6 × 6.75 in and 7.5 in tall, and the small one 2.25 × 2.75 in. A4 prints about 4% bigger; the cm sizes are on each page.
How thick should I roll the gingerbread?
About ¼ in (6 mm). Thinner pieces break, thicker ones spread and make the corners hard to line up. Trim the edges against the paper pattern straight after baking.
Can I make it without baking?
Yes. Cut the same pieces from cereal-box card or foam board for a model that lasts, or print the paper gingerbread house, which is one sheet to colour, fold and glue.
Is the template free for a class or a bake sale?
Yes, free for home, school, library and community use, and you can sell the houses you bake. Please do not resell or republish the template files themselves.
