How to use these pages
Second grade moves from numbers to 100 to numbers to 1,000. Children learn that 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 7 ones make 347, compare three-digit numbers, and add and take away within 100 using tens and ones. By the end of the year most know their adding and taking away facts within 20 by heart. They also count coins to a dollar, tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes, measure in inches and centimeters, and arrange objects in arrays, which is where multiplication starts.
A good order is a few minutes of facts within 20 every day (the fact sheets or a colour by code picture), then place value with the base ten blocks sheet before any bigger adding and taking away. Bonds to 100 and the number line in tens show how to add 38 + 20 or 100 − 65 in your head. Money, time and measuring fit in at any point and make good one-sheet days. Column addition with regrouping is not in this set yet.
