How to use these pages
A fill-in-the-blank story is a word game for two or more people. One person reads out the word list, one blank at a time: “I need a noun… an adjective… a silly sound”. Everyone else calls out a word without knowing the story. Only when every blank is filled does the reader read the whole story aloud, and the random words make it funny. It works at the Christmas dinner table, at a class party, on a long car trip or as a quiet game for one.
Every story here is our own, written for Colouring Nest, except “The Night Before Christmas”, which leaves gaps in the opening lines of the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas (it is in the public domain). There are three kinds: stories for kids from about 6 with simple word types such as animal, food and colour; classroom stories for grades 2 to 5 that practise nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs; and family and party stories for mixed ages, teens and adults.
Each PDF has three pages: the word list (each word type with a one-line hint and a box to write in), the story with numbered blanks to copy the words into, and a read-aloud example with our own silly words filled in. There are US Letter and A4 PDFs and an ink-saver version. Or play any story online: type the words, press the button and the story appears.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play a fill-in-the-blank story?
Don’t look at the story first. Ask for each word on the word list in order (a noun, a verb, an animal), write it in its box, then copy each word into the story blank with the same number and read the story aloud. The sillier the words, the funnier it gets. With one player, cover the story and fill in the list alone.
What is a noun, a verb, an adjective and an adverb?
A noun names a person, place or thing (sock, kitchen, Grandma). A verb is an action word (jump, sing). An adjective describes a noun (fluffy, enormous). An adverb tells how something is done, and often ends in -ly (loudly, slowly). Each word list has a one-line hint and two examples beside every word type.
What ages are these Christmas stories for?
The kids stories suit about 6 to 10 (a grown-up can write for younger children who say the words). The classroom stories suit grades 2 to 5, about 7 to 11. The family and party stories suit about 9 to adults, and the office party story is written for adults but is clean enough to read aloud to anyone.
Are these stories free?
Yes. Every story is free to print for home, classroom and party use, with no sign-up, and free to play online.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
