How to use these pages
Grammar in the early grades is about naming the jobs words do. In first grade children learn that a noun names a person, place, animal or thing, that an action verb tells what someone does, and that a sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a mark. In second grade they add plural nouns, past tense verbs, adjectives, pronouns, contractions and compound words. By third grade they sort words by part of speech, tell the four types of sentences apart and choose words with the same or opposite meaning.
These sheets follow that order. Start with circle the nouns and circle the action verb, then plural nouns with s or es, common and proper nouns and pronouns. For describing words there is describe the picture and sort the adjectives; for sentences, fix the sentence and types of sentences. Word study has contractions, compound words, synonyms and antonyms, and the parts of speech color by code brings nouns, verbs and adjectives together. For grammar in a story, try the Christmas fill in the blank stories.
Frequently asked questions
Are these grammar worksheets free?
Yes. Every grammar worksheet is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4 and an ink-saver version.
Do the grammar worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. Every worksheet has its answer key on page 2 of the PDF, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen.
What grammar is taught in 2nd grade?
Most second grade programmes cover common and proper nouns, plural nouns, past tense verbs, adjectives, pronouns, contractions, compound words and capital letters and end marks. The 2nd grade sheets here practise each of those, one skill per page.
What are the parts of speech for kids?
The first three to learn are nouns (names of people, places, animals and things), verbs (action words) and adjectives (describing words). Pronouns such as he, she, it, we and they take the place of nouns. The parts of speech color by code practises all three at once.
What is the difference between a statement and a command?
Both end with a period. A statement tells something (“The park is near my house.”). A command tells someone to do something and usually starts with the action (“Close the door, please.”). A question asks and ends with a question mark, and an exclamation shows strong feeling and ends with an exclamation mark.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
