Lowercase letters are the ones children meet most in books, and b, d, p and q are the ones they mix up most. These 26 cards show one lowercase letter large on the front, a to z. On the back is the capital letter, a picture and a word that starts with the letter, so a child who reads “d” can turn over and see D for dog. Use them after the uppercase cards, or alongside them for matching games.

How to print and use these cards

The PDF has 6 pages: 3 sheets of 9 card fronts, each followed by its backs. Print double-sided and flip on the long edge, or glue each back page to its front before cutting. Then cut on the dashed lines.

Ways to play

  • Pull out b, d, p and q and practise just those four, saying a word for each (bear, dog, pig, queen).
  • Lay out the uppercase and lowercase cards face up and match each capital to its small letter.
  • Hide cards around the room; each one found is read aloud before it goes in the box.

Printing tips

  • Print one sheet double-sided first to check how your printer lines up the backs.
  • Keep each set in an envelope or a zip bag, and write the set’s name on it.
  • Mix in two or three cards a child already knows, so every practice starts with a win.
