Ten picture cards for counting from 1 to 10: one apple, two stars, three fish, four balloons and so on, all our own coloured drawings in neat rows. Children touch each picture as they count, say the total and turn over to check the numeral and the word. It is the first step from counting out loud to knowing what a number means, and suits toddlers and preschoolers from about 2 with a grown-up.

How to print and use these cards
The PDF has 4 pages: 2 sheets of 9 card fronts, each followed by its backs. Print double-sided and flip on the long edge, or glue each back page to its front before cutting. Then cut on the dashed lines.
Ways to play
- Touch and count each picture, then say the last number again: “one, two, three… three fish!”
- Put out counters or buttons to match the pictures on a card, one on top of each.
- Lay the cards in order from 1 to 10 and notice that each one has one more picture.
