How to use these pages
Every set prints as one PDF with the fronts and the backs on facing pages: page 1 is the fronts of the first sheet, page 2 their backs, and so on. Print it double-sided and choose “flip on long edge”: each back lands behind its own front, because the backs are laid out mirror-wise. Then cut along the dashed lines. No double-sided printer? Print the pages one by one, glue each back page to its front page (line up the dashed lines against a window), let it dry and cut.
Start small. Pick five to eight cards a child nearly knows, go through them every day for a few minutes, and add a new card when one is answered straight away on three days. Turn the cards over to check: the back always shows the answer, a picture or a word, so children can check themselves.
Prefer a screen? Every alphabet, number and times table set is also in our free online flash cards game: flip the card, say the answer and mark it, or type it in. It needs no sign-up and keeps the cards you know on your own device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I print double-sided flash cards?
Open the PDF, choose two-sided (duplex) printing and “flip on long edge”, and print at 100% (actual size). The backs are mirrored, so each one prints behind its front. Print one sheet first to check your printer lines them up; most are within a millimetre or two, and the cards leave a margin for that.
What paper should I use for flash cards?
Card stock of 160 to 200 gsm (60 to 110 lb cover) makes cards that survive lots of shuffling. Ordinary paper works too: glue it to cereal-box card, or laminate the cut cards.
What age are these flash cards for?
Alphabet, counting and colour and shape cards suit toddlers and preschoolers from about 2 or 3 with a grown-up. Number cards to 100, subitizing cards and addition and subtraction cards suit ages 4 to 7. Multiplication cards are usually for ages 7 to 10. Emotion cards work at any age, from preschool up.
Are the emotion cards for autistic children?
Many families and teachers use picture emotion cards with autistic children, children who don’t speak much yet and children learning English, which is why there is a set without words. The cards are a talking tool for home and class, not a therapy or a diagnosis; a child’s own therapist or teacher can say how best to use them.
Can I use these flash cards in my classroom?
Yes. Print as many sets as you need for home, home school or your class. There is no sign-up or email. Please don’t resell them or upload them to another website.
Is there an online version?
Yes. The flash cards game has the letters, numbers and times tables: flip the card or type the answer, with large print and no time limit.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
