Ten pictures with three letters each. This time children listen for the last sound of the word: dog ends with g, bed ends with d, fox ends with x. Hearing the end of a word is harder than hearing the start, so say the word slowly and stress the end. None of the letters to choose from are in the word already, so the child has to listen rather than guess. Page 2 is the answer key.

Tips for this phonics worksheet

  • Say the word slowly and stress the last sound: “do-g”.
  • Cover the start of the word with a hand when you say it: just listen to the end.
  • Check: does the letter you circled come at the end when you write the word?

Page 2 of the PDF is the answer key. The beginning sounds picture cards practise the same skill as a game. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the short vowel sort and the CVC words worksheet. See all phonics worksheets.
