Five columns, one for each short vowel: a as in cat, e as in bed, i as in pig, o as in dog and u as in sun. Ten pictures to cut out, two for each vowel. Children say each word slowly, listen for the sound in the middle and glue the picture in its column. Short vowels sound alike, so this is where careful listening pays off. Page 2 shows the sorted pictures.

Tips for this phonics worksheet
- Say the five short vowel sounds before you start: a, e, i, o, u.
- Say each word slowly; the vowel is the sound in the middle.
- E and i sound alike: say bed and pig side by side and feel your mouth.
Page 2 of the PDF is the answer key. The letter tracing pages help when a letter is hard to write. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the digraph sort and the pre-primer sight words. See all phonics worksheets.
