Twenty sums within 10 where one of the two numbers being added is missing, like 4 + □ = 9 or □ + 3 = 8. Children can count on from the number they know to the total, or use a number bond: 4 and 5 make 9. Missing addends are the bridge between adding and taking away. Answers on page 2.

Tips for this worksheet

  • Count on from the number you know to the total; the number of jumps is the missing number.
  • Check by adding: put your number in the box and read the whole sum aloud.
  • Turn it round: if 4 + □ = 9, then 9 − 4 = □.

Every answer is a whole number from 0 to 10, and subtraction never goes below zero. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the within 20 sheets on the addition and subtraction worksheets page.
