A cone party hat to print, colour, roll and wear. Page 1 is the child-size hat with HAPPY BIRTHDAY, stars and balloons to colour (you can colour it online too); pages 2 and 3 are the adult size in two parts; pages 4 to 6 are the same hats plain, to decorate with a name, an age or your own pattern. Printed at 100% on A4, the child hat is about 15 cm tall and 10 cm across the bottom, and the adult hat 19 cm tall and 13 cm across (on US Letter 5¾ in and 7 in tall).

Sizes of the finished hat when the PDF is printed at 100% (actual size). Choose the A4 PDF in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and the Letter PDF in the US and Canada.

The hats sit on top of the head and are held on with elastic, so one size fits a range of heads: the child size suits toddlers and young children, the adult size older children and grown-ups.

How to make the birthday hat

  1. Print at 100% (actual size), on thin card (160 gsm, or 65 lb cover stock) if you have it. Page 1 is the child-size hat to colour, pages 2–3 the adult size, pages 4–6 the plain versions.
  2. Colour the hat, or decorate a plain one with the birthday child’s name, their age or your own stripes and dots.
  3. Cut round the thick outline, keeping the grey glue tab on. Make the small grey circles into holes with a hole punch or a pencil tip (an adult job for small children).
  4. Child size: curl the hat into a cone so the other straight edge covers the grey tab, then glue or tape it. Adult size: glue the grey tab of part 1 under the straight edge of part 2, then curl it round and glue part 2’s tab under part 1.
  5. Thread thin elastic, about 30 cm (12 in) long, through the two holes and knot each end inside, so it goes under the chin. A tissue-paper pompom or a cotton ball glued on the tip finishes it off.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% (actual size) so the shapes match the sizes listed.
  • Thin card (160–200 gsm) makes sturdy stencils and decorations.
  • Fold the paper and cut two layers at once for matching pairs.
  • Paper snowflakes are the exception: use thin printer or origami paper, because every cut goes through 12 layers.
