How to use these pages

The big jump in first grade is from adding and taking away within 10 to doing it within 20, using strategies instead of counting on fingers: making ten (8 + 5 is 8 + 2 + 3), doubles and near doubles, and fact families that turn every adding fact into a taking away fact. Children also start to see numbers to 100 as tens and ones, compare them, read the clock to the hour and half hour, and split shapes into halves and quarters, their first fractions.

A good order is a quick warm-up within 10, then number bonds to 20, then the addition and subtraction within 20 sheets, starting with the number line and missing addend ones. Short and often works better than long: one sheet of 10 to 15 minutes a day. Younger children can start on the kindergarten math worksheets, and older ones move on to the second grade math worksheets.

Reading at the same age? The first grade sight words have a list and read-and-colour sheets to go with these, and the phonics worksheets cover CVC words, word families and the digraphs sh, ch, th, wh and ck.
