Canfield Solitaire: Free Online, Large Cards
Canfield solitaire (Demon patience in Britain) deals a reserve of thirteen cards, four columns of one card, and one card to the first foundation: its rank is where every foundation starts this game. You turn the stock three cards at a time, as often as you like, and try to get all 52 cards up. Ours is free, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and has large, clear cards with a “Larger print” button. Many Canfield deals cannot be won, so we only offer the 366 numbered deals our solver program has won, plus a deal of the day: every game here can be won.

How to play
- Build the four foundations (top right) up by suit, starting from the rank of the card dealt there (shown under the stock). They go round the corner: … Queen, King, Ace, 2 …
- In the four columns, put a card on one exactly one higher of the other colour: a red 6 on a black 7. A King can go on an Ace.
- Move the bottom card of a column, or the whole column at once.
- The reserve (bottom left) holds thirteen cards; its top card can be played. An empty column is filled from the reserve at once. When the reserve is empty, put any card you like in an empty column.
- Tap the stock to turn three cards onto the waste; only the top waste card can be played. When the stock runs out, tap it to turn the waste back over. There is no limit.
- Tap a card to pick it up, then tap where it should go. Tap it again, or double-click it, to send it to the best place. You can also drag.
- Keyboard: arrow keys move between the piles, Enter picks up the bottom card (Up arrow adds the cards above it), Enter on another pile puts it there, Enter twice sends it to the best place, U undoes, Escape cancels.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups and seniors who like Klondike and want a quicker, trickier game. Sound is off unless you turn it on, there is no time limit, and “Pause” stops the clock.

Canfield solitaire tips and strategy
- Empty the reserve first. It is what stops most Canfield games: play its top card whenever it fits, even before a waste card.
- Remember the starting rank (shown under the stock): the foundations go round the corner, so after a King comes an Ace.
- Keep columns short. An empty column is refilled from the reserve at once, which is one more reserve card out of the way.
- Turning three at a time, you can only reach every third card. Count ahead: playing one waste card shifts which cards come up on the next pass.
- Moving a whole column onto another can free a space for the reserve. Look for it whenever the top card of one column fits the bottom of another.
- Undo is unlimited: if the stock passes start to repeat with no moves, undo back to the last choice you made.

Questions
Can every game of Canfield be won?
Every deal we offer can. Not every Canfield deal can be won, so our solver program played thousands of deals and we only use the 366 it won. Each has a number, so you can replay one or share it with a friend. Our solver won a little over half the deals it tried, and many of those need careful play. If you get stuck, Undo is unlimited.
Why does the foundation start at a different card?
In Canfield the first card dealt to a foundation sets the starting rank for all four suits that game. If it is a 7, each foundation goes 7, 8 … King, Ace … 6.
What should I play first?
Play from the reserve whenever you can: the reserve is what stops most Canfield games, and every card that leaves it is one less to dig out. Keep a column empty only as long as the reserve can refill it.
Is it the same as Demon patience?
Yes: Canfield is the American name and Demon the British one for the same game.
Is Canfield solitaire good for seniors?
It was made with seniors in mind: big card numbers and suits, a “Larger print” button for even bigger cards, no time limit (the clock is only for your own record), unlimited undo, hints, a pause button and no pop-ups. Sound is off unless you turn it on.
Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?
It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.
Does it work on a tablet or phone?
Yes. Tap or drag with a finger on a tablet or phone, or use a mouse. It also plays with the keyboard alone (see “How to play”). Turn a phone sideways for more room.
