FreeCell Solitaire: Free Online, Large Cards

FreeCell is the solitaire where every card is face up from the start, so it is all skill and no luck. Ours is free, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and has large, clear cards with a “Larger print” button for even bigger ones. Play the daily deal or any numbered deal from 1 to 32000 (the same numbers other FreeCell games use); our solver has won every deal we offer, so every game can be won. Cards that are safe to put up go to the foundations on their own, and Undo and Hint are always there.

How to play freecell

  1. Build four piles, one per suit, from Ace up to King, in the four spaces on the top right (the foundations).
  2. In the eight columns, put a card on one that is one higher and the other colour: a red 6 on a black 7. Any card can go in an empty column.
  3. The four spaces on the top left are free cells: each holds one card while you dig out the card you need.
  4. You can move several ordered cards at once: one more than your empty free cells, and twice as many for each empty column.
  5. Tap a card (or a run) to select it, then tap where it should go. Tap it again, or double-click it, to send it to the best place. You can also drag cards.
  6. Cards go up to the foundations by themselves once they are no longer needed in the columns. When every column is in order, “Finish for me” puts the rest up.
  7. Keyboard: arrow keys move between the cells and columns, Enter picks up the bottom card (Up arrow adds more cards from the column), Enter on another pile puts it there, Enter twice sends it to the best place, U undoes, Escape cancels.

Who it’s for: Grown-ups and seniors who like to plan ahead. Sound is off unless you turn it on, there is no time limit, and “Pause” stops the clock.

    FreeCell tips and strategy

    • Look before you move. Every card is face up, so find the four Aces and the 2s first and plan how to dig them out.
    • Keep at least one free cell empty as long as you can. Filling all four early leaves you with no room to move.
    • An empty column is worth more than a free cell: it doubles how many cards you can move in one go. Clearing a short column early is often the best first goal.
    • Build long runs in order (red, black, red…) in one column, so they can later move together.
    • Avoid burying low cards under a King: Kings can only leave a column by going to a free cell, an empty column or the foundations.

    Questions

Can every FreeCell game be won?

Almost. Of the 32,000 classic numbered deals, only a handful cannot be won (deal 11982 is the famous one). Our solver program played all 32,000 and won 31,996; we never offer the 4 it could not win (11982, 13996, 21554, 26927). If you get stuck, Undo is unlimited.

What do the deal numbers mean?

Each number from 1 to 32000 is always the same deal, the numbering that many FreeCell programs have shared for decades. Type a number to replay a deal you liked, or to play the same one as a friend. “Today’s game” picks a new numbered deal every day.

How many cards can I move at once?

One card at a time, officially, but you can move a run in one go when there is room to do it card by card: one more card than your empty free cells, doubled for each empty column. With 2 free cells and 1 empty column that is (2 + 1) × 2 = 6 cards.

    Is FreeCell good for seniors?

It was made with seniors in mind: big card numbers and suits, a “Larger print” button for even bigger cards, no time limit (the clock is only for your own record), unlimited undo, hints, a pause button and no pop-ups. Sound is off unless you turn it on.

FreeCell or Klondike: which is easier?

FreeCell has no hidden cards and no stock, so you can plan every move and almost every deal can be won. Klondike solitaire depends more on the luck of the cards. If you like thinking ahead, start with FreeCell; for a relaxed game, try Klondike with turn 1.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?

It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.

Does it work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Tap or drag with a finger on a tablet or phone, or use a mouse. It also plays with the keyboard alone (see “How to play”). Turn a phone sideways for more room.
