Christmas mahjong solitaire is the calm tile-matching game with festive tiles: take away matching pairs of free tiles until the board is empty. It is free, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and every tile is one of our own Christmas pictures with its name printed on it: a tree, a snowman, a present, a star, a bell, a stocking, a candy cane, a bauble and more. Start with the small board of 36 big tiles; every board can be cleared, and Hint and Shuffle are always there.

How to play
- Find two tiles with the same Christmas picture and tap them both to take them away.
- You can only take a tile that is free: nothing on top of it, and nothing touching its left side or its right side. Blocked tiles look paler.
- Clear every tile to win. Take tiles from the top and the ends of long rows first, so you don’t bury a match.
- Hint shows a matching pair. If no free pairs are left, Shuffle mixes the tiles that are left so the board can still be cleared. Undo puts the last pair back.
- Keyboard: Tab or the arrow keys move between free tiles, Enter selects a tile.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups, seniors and older kids. Sound is off unless you turn it on, there is no time limit, and “Pause” stops the clock.

Christmas mahjong solitaire tips and strategy
- Start with the small board: its nine Christmas pictures (tree, snowman, present, star, bell, stocking, candy cane, bauble, Santa hat) are the easiest to tell apart.
- Take from the top of the stack and the ends of the longest rows first; those tiles block the most others.
- When all four of one picture are free, take both pairs at once.
- Similar colours trip people up (the bell and the star are both gold): read the name printed on each tile.

Questions
Can every Christmas mahjong board be cleared?
Yes. Each board is built backwards from an empty table, pair by pair, so there is always at least one way to clear it. If you take pairs in another order you can still get stuck; Shuffle then re-deals the tiles that are left so they can all be matched.
What pictures are on the Christmas tiles?
36 Christmas and winter pictures we drew ourselves: a Christmas tree, snowman, present, star, bell, stocking, candy cane, bauble and Santa hat on the small board, then a reindeer, gingerbread man, holly, wreath, candle, snow globe, sleigh, angel and mitten, and on the large board a robin, penguin, teddy, toy train, snowflake, drum, cocoa, polar bear, igloo and more. Each tile shows its name too.
Which board should I start with?
Small (36 tiles, 9 pictures) takes about five minutes and has the biggest tiles: the best start on a phone and for seniors. Medium has 72 tiles and Large 144, best on a computer or tablet.
Is there a new board every day?
Yes: “Today’s game” is a new Christmas board each day, the same for everyone, so a family or a care-home group can all play the same one through December. “New game” gives you another board whenever you like.
Is this the same as the year-round mahjong solitaire?
The rules and boards are the same as our mahjong solitaire; only the tile pictures change, to Christmas ones. Your larger print setting carries over.
Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?
It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.
