Pyramid Solitaire: Free Online, Large Cards

Pyramid solitaire is a quick, calm card game: take away pairs of uncovered cards that add up to 13 until the whole pyramid is gone. Ours is free, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and has large, clear cards with a “Larger print” button for even bigger ones. Most Pyramid deals cannot be won, so we only offer deals our solver program has won: every game here can be cleared. Undo and Hint are unlimited, and a game takes about five minutes.

How to play pyramid solitaire

  1. Take away two uncovered cards that add up to 13: Ace (1) with Queen (12), 2 with Jack (11), 3 with 10, 4 with 9, 5 with 8, 6 with 7. A King counts 13 and goes on its own.
  2. A card in the pyramid is uncovered when neither of the two cards overlapping it from the row below is left. Covered cards look paler.
  3. Tap the stock to turn a card onto the waste. The top waste card can pair with an uncovered pyramid card. You can go through the stock three times.
  4. Clear every card in the pyramid to win. Cards left in the stock don’t matter.
  5. Tap one card, then the card it pairs with. Tap a King once to take it away. You can also drag one card onto its partner.
  6. Keyboard: arrow keys move between the uncovered cards, the stock and the waste; Enter selects a card, Enter on its partner takes the pair away; U undoes, Escape cancels.

    Pyramid solitaire tips and strategy

    • Learn the pairs that make 13: Queen and Ace, Jack and 2, 10 and 3, 9 and 4, 8 and 5, 7 and 6. Kings count 13 on their own.
    • Look at the whole pyramid before turning the stock. Free first the cards that cover the most others, near the middle of the lower rows.
    • Watch for a card sitting on its own partner (a 6 covering a 7): they can never pair with each other, so you will need a 7 or a 6 from somewhere else.
    • Don’t use up a stock card that the pyramid needs later. If two 8s are free and only one 5 is left, think about which 8 to pair.
    • You get three times through the stock here. On the first pass, notice where the partners you need are waiting.

    Questions

Can every Pyramid game be won?

No: most Pyramid deals cannot be cleared however well you play. That is why we only use deals our solver program has cleared (366 of them). If you get stuck, Undo and pair the cards a different way: it often matters which 6 you pair with a 7.

    What does each card count?

    Ace is 1, number cards are their number, Jack is 11, Queen is 12 and King is 13. Pairs that make 13: A + Q, 2 + J, 3 + 10, 4 + 9, 5 + 8 and 6 + 7. A King makes 13 on its own.

How many times can I go through the stock?

Three times in all. When the stock runs out, tap it to turn the waste back over; the counter under the cards shows which time through you are on.

Is Pyramid solitaire good for seniors?

It was made with seniors in mind: big card numbers and suits, a “Larger print” button for even bigger cards, no time limit (the clock is only for your own record), unlimited undo, hints, a pause button and no pop-ups. Sound is off unless you turn it on.

Is it good for practising maths?

Yes: finding pairs that make 13 is quick mental adding up, which is why some teachers use it with older children. For more number practice that prints, see our times tables worksheets.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?

It is free and plays in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download and no account. Your stats are kept in this browser only. A few adverts on the page, kept well away from the game, pay for the site.

Does it work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Tap or drag with a finger on a tablet or phone, or use a mouse. It also plays with the keyboard alone (see “How to play”). Turn a phone sideways for more room.
