How to use these pages

Measurement and data is one of the big strands of third grade maths. Children find the area of a shape by counting square units and then learn that multiplying the length by the width gives the same answer much faster. They find the perimeter by adding the lengths of the sides, and learn not to mix the two up. They measure lengths to the nearest half inch and centimetre, read and draw bar graphs and picture graphs where one square or picture stands for more than one, show measurements on a line plot, and work out how much time has passed.

A good order is area by counting squares, then area of rectangles, perimeter and the mixed area and perimeter worksheet. For measuring, start with the nearest inch and centimeters sheets, then the nearest half inch. The bar graph, picture graph and line plot sheets fit in at any time. Rounding is on the rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 worksheet, and reading a clock to the minute on the telling time to the minute worksheet.

Frequently asked questions

Are these measurement worksheets free?

Yes. Every worksheet is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4, an ink-saver version and an answer key on page 2.

Do the area and perimeter worksheets have answers?

Yes. Every sheet has its answer key on page 2 of the PDF, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen.

What is the difference between area and perimeter?

Area is the space inside a shape, counted in square units: a rectangle 4 long and 3 wide covers 12 squares. Perimeter is the distance all the way round the edge: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 is 14 units. Colour the inside for area and trace the edge for perimeter.

Will the ruler print at the right size?

Print at 100% (Actual size), not “Fit to page”. The inch rulers are true inches on the US Letter PDF and the centimetre ruler true centimetres on the A4 PDF. On the other paper the ruler and the pictures grow or shrink together, so measuring with the ruler on the sheet still gives the right answers.

What grade are these worksheets for?

Most suit grade 3 (ages 8 to 9). Measuring to the nearest inch and centimetre is a grade 2 skill and makes a good warm-up; the area and perimeter worksheets are also useful revision in grade 4.

Is there a PDF to print?

Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
