Six shapes drawn on square grids. The first two are rectangles; the others are made of two or three rectangles joined together, like an L, a T or a step. Every square inside a shape is one square unit, so the area is the number of squares it covers. Children count the squares, colouring each one as they go so none is counted twice, and write the area in square units. It is the idea behind every area formula: before multiplying, see what area means. Page 2 is the answer key.
