See fractions as distances on the fraction number lines 0 to 1 and the decimal number line. Younger children can start with the first grade math worksheets; older ones need the times tables and division facts for simplifying. More for the classroom: printables for teachers.

How to use these pages

Fractions start with equal parts. In first grade children split shapes into halves and quarters (fourths), in second grade into thirds, and in third grade they write fractions as numbers, find them on a number line, and compare them. Fourth and fifth grade add and subtract fractions, simplify them and change between mixed numbers and improper fractions. These sheets follow that order, so start wherever your child is.

Pictures come first on purpose: a child who can see that 2/4 of a bar is the same as 1/2 of it understands equivalent fractions long before learning a rule for them. Keep the fraction wall and the fraction number lines on the table while working through the comparing and adding sheets.

Frequently asked questions

Are these fraction worksheets free?

Yes. Every fraction worksheet is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4 and an ink-saver version.

Do the fraction worksheets have answers?

Yes. Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen. On the shading sheets the key shades the right parts.

What grade are these fraction worksheets for?

Equal parts and halves and quarters suit grade 1; halves, thirds and quarters and naming the shaded fraction suit grade 2; fractions of a set, the fraction wall, equivalent fractions, comparing and number lines suit grade 3; adding, subtracting, simplifying and mixed numbers suit grades 4 and 5.

Do I need to simplify the answers to the adding and subtracting sheets?

No. Those sheets practise adding and taking away with like denominators, so an answer such as 2/4 is right as it is. Simplifying is practised on its own sheet.

Is there a PDF to print?

Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
