How to use these pages
Place value is the idea that a digit is worth more or less depending on where it sits: the 4 in 46 is four tens, but the 4 in 64 is four ones. In first grade children see two-digit numbers as tens and ones, usually with base-ten blocks (a rod of ten and single units). In second grade they add hundreds and write numbers to 1,000 in expanded form, and in third and fourth grade they work with thousands, round to the nearest 10 and 100, and say what each digit is worth.
These sheets follow that order. Start with the tens and ones with base ten blocks sheet, keep the blank place value chart on the table for the harder ones, and use the 0–99 number chart to see that every number in a row has the same tens digit.
Frequently asked questions
Are these place value worksheets free?
Yes. Every place value worksheet is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4 and an ink-saver version.
Do the place value worksheets have answers?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen. The blank place value chart has a filled-in example chart on page 2 instead.
What grade are these place value worksheets for?
Tens and ones, base ten blocks, expanded form for two-digit numbers and the cut and paste sort suit grade 1; hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form to 1,000, the place value chart and comparing numbers suit grade 2; number words, the value of a digit and rounding suit grade 3; expanded form to 10,000 suits grade 4.
How do I teach place value with base ten blocks?
Count out loose units until you reach ten, then swap the ten units for one rod: that is one ten. Ten rods swap for a flat, one hundred. On the sheets, count the rods first (the tens), then the single units (the ones), and write the number: 4 rods and 7 units is 47.
Why do the expanded form sheets have no zeros?
They use numbers with no zero digits on purpose, so every number has one part per place. Numbers with a zero, such as 406, are on the place value chart and number words sheets, where the zero has its own box.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
