How to use these pages
Adding and taking away within 10 is the main maths goal of kindergarten, and within 20 the main goal of first grade (Year 1 and 2 in the UK and New Zealand). These sheets go in small steps: pictures to count first, then plain facts, then mixed adding and taking away, so children have to read the sign. Number lines show the jumps, missing addend sheets ask “what do I add to make…?”, and fact families tie adding and taking away together.
Within 20, the useful trick is making ten: 8 + 5 is 8 + 2 + 3, and 13 − 5 is 13 − 3 − 2. If a child is counting on fingers for every fact, go back to the number bonds to 10 for a week; they are the facts every one of these sheets is built on.
Frequently asked questions
Are these addition and subtraction worksheets free?
Yes. Every worksheet is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4 and an ink-saver version.
Do the worksheets have answers?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen. On the number line sheets the key also draws the jumps.
What grade are these worksheets for?
The within 10 sheets suit kindergarten and the start of first grade (ages 5 to 6). The within 20 sheets suit first grade and the start of second grade (ages 6 to 7). Children learn at different rates, so start wherever your child is comfortable.
Is there any subtraction with negative numbers?
No. Every subtraction starts with the bigger number, so the answer is never below zero, and every answer stays within 10 or within 20 as the sheet says.
Is there a PDF to print?
Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
