Sixteen two-digit numbers to write in expanded form, as the tens plus the ones: 47 = 40 + 7. The first box is always a whole number of tens (40, not 4), which is the point of the sheet: the 4 in 47 is worth forty. Every number has a tens digit and a ones digit, so each answer has exactly two parts.

Tips for this place value worksheet
- The tens part always ends in 0: 40, not 4.
- Check by adding the two parts back together.
- Use base ten blocks: the rods are the first box, the units the second.
Page 2 of the PDF is the answer key. The 0–99 number chart shows tens and ones in rows and columns. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the hundreds, tens and ones sheet. See all place value worksheets.
