How to use these pages

Children learn shapes in a clear order. In preschool and kindergarten they name the flat (2D) shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, then oval, rhombus (diamond), hexagon and the rest, and spot them in everyday things like a clock, a door or a slice of pizza. In first grade they count sides and corners and start on solid (3D) shapes: cube, sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid and rectangular prism. In second grade they count the faces, edges and vertices of solid shapes.

These sheets follow that order. Start with the 2D shapes coloring page and trace the shapes, then name the shapes and sort them. For solid shapes, colour the 3D shapes coloring page first, then try 2D or 3D? and faces, edges and vertices. Real blocks, boxes, balls and cans on the table make every sheet easier.

Frequently asked questions

Are these shapes worksheets free?

Yes. Every shapes worksheet and coloring page is free to print for home, home school and classroom use, with no sign-up. Each one has a PDF for US Letter and A4, and an ink-saver version.

Do the shapes worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. Every worksheet with answers has its answer key on page 2 of the PDF, and “Show solution” shows the answers on screen. The coloring pages and the tracing sheet have nothing to mark, so they are one page.

What shapes should a kindergartner know?

Most kindergarten programmes cover circle, square, triangle, rectangle and hexagon, plus solid shapes such as cube, sphere, cone and cylinder. Many also add oval, rhombus (diamond), star and heart. Children should name them whatever their size or which way they are turned.

How many faces, edges and vertices does a cube have?

A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices, the same as a rectangular prism. A square pyramid has 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices; a triangular prism has 5 faces, 9 edges and 6 vertices.

What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?

A 2D shape is flat: you can draw it on paper, like a circle or a square. A 3D shape is solid: you can hold it, like a ball (a sphere) or a dice (a cube). Many 3D shapes have 2D shapes as their faces: every face of a cube is a square.

Is there a PDF to print?

Yes. Every page has free PDF downloads for US Letter and A4 paper, with the picture centered inside print-safe margins. Choose "Download PDF (Letter)" or "Download PDF (A4)" on the page and print at 100% (actual size).
