A table of five solid shapes with straight edges: a cube, a rectangular prism, a triangular prism, a square pyramid and a triangular pyramid. Every edge is drawn, with the ones at the back dashed, so children can count them all. For each shape they write the number of faces (flat surfaces), edges (where two faces meet) and vertices (corners). A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices; the others are on page 2, the answer key.

Tips for this shapes worksheet

  • Faces are the flat surfaces, edges are the lines where two faces meet, vertices are the corners.
  • Count the dashed edges at the back too.
  • Check with a real box: it has the same counts as the rectangular prism.

Page 2 of the PDF is the answer key. Cut-out shape templates make good counters for sorting and patterns. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the faces, edges and vertices worksheet, the fraction worksheets (equal parts of shapes) and tangram puzzles. See all shapes worksheets.

What it practises
Naming 2D shapes and finding them in real life, sides, corners, patterns and sorting, 3D shapes: faces, edges and vertices
How to use it
Keep real things on the table: a ball, a box, a can, a party hat. Turn the flat shapes around so children learn that a turned triangle is still a triangle. Answers on page 2.
