Twelve shapes in a grid, six flat and six solid, mixed up. Under each one children circle 2D if it is flat, like a drawing on paper, or 3D if it is solid, something you could hold. Watch for the pairs that are easy to mix up: a circle and a sphere, a square and a cube, a triangle and a cone or pyramid. The dashed lines on the 3D shapes are the edges at the back. Page 2 is the answer key.

Tips for this shapes worksheet

  • Ask: could I pick it up and hold it? Then it is 3D.
  • Look for the dashed lines: only 3D shapes have hidden edges.
  • Find the flat shape that matches each solid one: circle and sphere, square and cube.

Page 2 of the PDF is the answer key. Cut-out shape templates make good counters for sorting and patterns. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the faces, edges and vertices worksheet, the fraction worksheets (equal parts of shapes) and tangram puzzles. See all shapes worksheets.
