Twenty sums with totals from 11 to 20 and one number missing, such as 8 + □ = 13 or □ + 9 = 15. Count on from the number you know (8, then 9, 10 up to 13 is 5 jumps), or take away: 13 − 8 = 5. Children who can do both are ready for word problems. Answers on page 2.

Tips for this worksheet
- Count on from the number you know to the total; the number of jumps is the missing number.
- Check by adding: put your number in the box and read the whole sum aloud.
- Turn it round: if 4 + □ = 9, then 9 − 4 = □.
Every answer is a whole number from 0 to 20, and subtraction never goes below zero. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the hundreds chart and the compare number sentences worksheet.
