Eight take-away pictures for kindergarten. Each row shows up to ten circles in rows of five, and some of them are crossed out. Children count all the circles, then the crossed-out ones, then the ones left, and write the three numbers as a subtraction sentence. Crossing out is how most children first see “taking away”, before they do it in their heads.

Tips for this worksheet

  • Point to each shape as you count it, or colour it in once it is counted.
  • Count the full row of five as “five”, then count on from there.
  • Read each finished sentence aloud: “5 take away 4 leaves 1”.

Every answer is a whole number from 0 to 10, and subtraction never goes below zero. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the within 20 sheets on the addition and subtraction worksheets page.
