Twelve shapes already split into two or four equal parts, with the fraction written in words underneath: shade one half, one quarter, two quarters or three quarters. First graders meet fractions as words before they meet them as numbers, so there are no fraction bars here. The same fraction appears on different shapes, so children see that a quarter of a circle and a quarter of a square are both one of four equal parts.
